!
150 miles to go and I wasn't wearing sunglasses
Left the Kumar's place early , crossed the wide Narrows and entered Gig Harbor by a back road . Found the Tourist Information office ( closed ) . From nowhere a helpful local stepped up and said - " we are closed on Tuesdays but what do you want - I'll open up especially for you " and she did . Supplied with fresh and free maps to scrawl on I headed to Windermere Realtors ( estate agents to you ).and got good advice on Gig Harbor walkable locations which I checked out . Then I went on to the sportsman's association which has a full events program and two English members .On to Keith's where he was working on a car but found the time to help with my route planning detail .
Second stop Port Orchard for my first American haircut , first cutthroat razor experience and another Realtor .Those hot towels are really good by the way . I felt like I was in a roaring twenties gangster movie and at any moment a pair of hoods would walk in , guns blazing ! Maybe thats why in that barbers you face away from the mirror towards the door .
Port Orchard , fine town , but a bit to spread out for non drivers .
By way of the old road ( I like these ) through Silverdale to Poulsbo an excellent walkable small town where I met an American shooting enthusiast and a man from Twickenham who owns a PubCafe on the pier . More realtor's advice - Poulsbo would be a better choice than Gig Harbor but I have a long way to travel with an open mind .
Randomly followed a brown sign to Scenic Beach State Park .Guess what - It was a State Park with a Scenic beach !
Headed for the coast , saw a food sign , felt hungry , took a left and ended up at Lefties
Here they were tickled by my accent and I was befriended by a lumberjack - and he was O.K .He had even heard of the Isle of Wight ( rock festival ) and liked " Monty Python " . Bet I know his favorite song !
Finally followed the " satnav " to the centre of Shelton where I stayed for the princely sun of $47.00 Another Ronseal place - the " City Center Best Rates Motel "
Being out in the " boonies " has its advantages !
Its my Birthday now - but only in the U.K.
When I wake it will be here too ! Love you all !
