Started the day with a walk around Shelton . A once grand logging town with some fine buildings but past its best . I loved its honesty .
Now westward along Elma's main street to Aberdeen , an industrial looking place at the mouth of the river Chenalis .
Then round the bay of Grays Harbor to Westport a seaside town that seemed to be an American sort of Camber Sands , not thriving but comfortable with itself .
Due south I constantly found myself stopping and photographing the unspoilt and peaceful vistas along highway 105 .
I stopped for links ( sausages ) , two fried eggs ( sunny side ) and pancakes in a railway themed Julies Krazy Kaboose thingamajig . Good wholesome honest food at a fair price .
I followed the route of the old seafood and lumber ( what else ) railway up one side and down the other of the Longbeach and Seaview peninsular . I have never seen so much perfect silver sand .
Here they charge 2.99 for a bucketful as play pit sand . At that price there is more than enough there to bail out the banks and buy General Motors .
Time off from driving I visited the Lewis and Clerk exhibition . For you differently knowledgeable folks back home these men headed a small party that was tasked by President Thomas Jefferson ( my hero )
to travel from the known East over three thousand miles through literally uncharted territory to reach the Pacific Coast at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River .This is here at Cape Disappointment.
The walk to the lighthouse and cove was short , steep but very worthwhile . As you can see from my Facebook album I was captivated by the beauty of the place ..
I rested at Fort Columbia where with the wonders of my dongle ( a mobile broadband device to my colonial cousins ) I logged onto Expedia and secured a nights lodging in Astoria at a good price . The problem was it was the wrong night ! As I had left the clock on my laptop on U.K. time I booked for that evening - but it was already tomorrow on that side of the pond so that was tomorrow evening not tonight . A quick call to the hotel sorted it out . I do alright by playing the amicable bumbling fool . I guess ill have to admit it . I am typecast in this roll .
I crossed the bridge to Oregon and followed the sat. nav. to the Astoria Column where again I was . . ... . .... ... . , I'm struggling for the right word . .... s*d it - its late - amazed by the panoramic views and the tower was not even open !
You will have to wait till tomorrow for them because this post is entitled Washington Coast not Oregon and I'm tired
