Big stuff - off to the Pub !

Verbage to follow .... i'm in the pub ....

I started the day with a tour of the largest building in the whole world . The Boeing assembly plant at Everett WA. I wont boor you with the numbers but it could house all of disneyworld Orlando and still have 14 acres of covered parking to spare ,

It is B I G ! Met an ex marine called Wendle who invited me to see a restoration museum nearby .I was tempted but actually got itchy feet and decided to fire up the Jeep and enter the big city they call Seattle , Here I got lost in a marble tile an glass monolith - the home the Regal bank and many other leading businesses . I opened an account as they are linked to American Life and this will make my banking life easier .Here I met an actual Australian and was amused to learn that they are constantly asked if they are English . This was a big big building (pics here ) .$10 lighter for parking I headed along the radius of the rough circle I had drawn around Seattle and within 15 minutes I had crossed lake Washington , passed Belvue and was in the wonderful small town of Issaquah . I went walkabout and loved it . A bit pricey to live but no wonder due to its proximity to Seattle and its small town charm . Another 10 minutes down I 90 and I was in North bend , another great town but a bit spread out compared to Issaquah .

Now round the circle I took highway 202 through Snoqualmie to Fall city another small happy place . Now following highway 203 I went all the way to Monroe another great town but possibly a bit to big to be perfect .I had paused in Carnation and the growing town of Duvall where the small blocks rise up on the East bank of the river Snoqualmie .
I stopped in Snohomish and had fish and chips in the English Pub run by a .n ex professional soccer player injured out of the game in 1963.

Today I liked all of the towns I had visited and feel I could just put the names in a hat , pick one and be very happy to rent there . The key factor in the long run would be affordability against location .

On checking Facebook I discovered I had been invited by Bill Montgomery and Connie huff to meet up with them at a music venue on Camino island and possibly camp at there place in Stanwood . They had been following this blog from a Washington state discussion on facebook . Were they genuine or was this some new kind of Nigerian scam . would I be robbed and left in a ditch without my boots . I have come to expect such welcoming friendliness from the great inhabitants of this fine country as quite normal so I called the number he left on facebook for me . It was an answer phone so left a message and decided that as I was still fresh ( could be the fish supper and English bitter ) I would drive up to Birch Bay and camp . I am there now . Lets see what tomorrow brings !

The S.T.EN. Gun

“ We will never surrender !” France fell to the German Blitzkrieg in May 1940 . The retreating British Army ended up being rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk by a flotilla of little ships leaving behind much of their equipment . A German invasion was expected ! Winston Churchill the British prime minister made his famous “ we will fight them on the beaches – we will never surrender ! “ speech and the Battle of Britain was on ! The UK desperately needed submachineguns . The Government ordered well made expensive Thompsons from the still neutral United States but there was never enough available . In order to rapidly equip a sufficient fighting force to counter the threat of invasion , the Royal Small Arms Factory , Enfield ( North London ) was commissioned to produce an alternative quickly and in large numbers . Whats in a name S.T.En. There Major R. V. Shepherd OBE and Mr. Harold John Turpin came up with the Design which became...

Bonny and Clyde and the Browning Automatic Rifle

Bonnie and Clyde and the BAR ! Clyde Barrow, holding a Browning automatic rifle. BAR's could fire a twenty-shot magazine loaded with armor-piercing ammunition in under three seconds. During the depression of the 1930's in the USA criminals were looked at in a different way by many of the people who had been victimized and impoverished by the rich bankers and the emerging powerful corporations. Many people saw them as people driven to the edge that were only taking back what was stolen from them and striking back at a society and Government that let the Depression cause so much harm to so many . Two of the most famous criminals of that time were Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow . They were known to be quite skilled with their weapons, and unlike most criminals, they practiced with them and maintained them . Sadly they are considered to be responsible for the deaths of at least Nine law enforcement officers and five civilians during...

CHARM - Why I had to act !

As everybody who knows me is aware I am pretty passionate about the victims of war , particularly those ordinary decent people who are called upon to take to arms when one group of people end up fighting another for a cause often nothing whatsoever to do with most of the individual people who end up doing the fighting .    " Theirs not to reason why theirs but to do or die " as I believe Tennyson put it ! As I have become older and possibly wiser  I have become less motivated by personal wealth and aggrandizement and more motivated into what would give meaning to my life - what can I do for others - how would things be different and better because of my own existence .  "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." John F. Kennedy   As a minor student of history I came to realize how lucky my generation was in relation to others of the past and how the curse of war absolutely dominates the historical narrative thr...
