Karma ! Continues - my kindness to the limping man returns magnified ten fold

After a good nights sleep under the pines I went back to Langley for another look . Just 100 yards prom downtown I was drawn to an old red British phone box . It was outside a slightly sad looking place with an exterior lockbox . It was obviously neglected and empty and for sale I was interested .
Location location location .As it was early on Sunday I did not pursue this interest . I took a few more pics of beautiful charming Langley and headed north towards Coupeville . As I passed a sign for the Central Whidbey Sportsman’s Association I did a left to see what shooting they offered I happened to walk in on a familiar range briefing . I explained my situation to the man running the shoot lyndell and he invited me to tag along . On stage one he offered me a .22 rimfire to have a go . By the end of stage 5 I had been given a 9mm Glock and a Smith and Wesson 8 shot wheel gun in .357 magnum and was writing down and adding up the times . This Speed Steel competition is a monthly event .It is very close to practical being based on time not score . They also have clay pigeon , and rifle competitions . I was told about a political divide between north and south with the south being arty and Democrat whilst the north is more conservative , particularly with the navy air base influence , and Republican . As a non voting alien I am happy to let them do their own thing !
Coupeville was next . I drove slowly around the town and eventually parked up a small hill outside the library .I crossed the carpark and was hailed by a tall man I had seen earlier limping across the road . I asked him what he wanted and he asked for a lift down to the town . A few minutes walk to me but obviously a arduous task for him . He seemed OK so I took him at face value and said I could but he would have to semi lie down in the back as the jeep was set up for camping . I thought this was the right thing to do . I dropped him off and parked at the end of the shopping area and got a Chelsea bun ( or cinnamon roll ) in the excellent . It was reduced as a day old but was superb . The tea was not hot enough to be properly infused and the owner , who kept a wonderful protective eye over her customers , noticed my distress and got me another hotter earl grey . It really refreshed me !

I continued my driving tour , pulled in at an open house - for sale by owner . The owner to my and hopefully his good fortune turned out to be a property developer called Darrell Wallen .
Within 10 minutes his wife Cindy had invited me to dinner and to stay at their main house and Darrell himself was taking me on an insiders driving tour round and about Coupeville in his battered old workhorse of a van .
Coupeville and Langley pictures here and here is his home and my bed for the night .
His main house was just great in a great location and I had to smile as seems to be the same world over builders never quite finish their own houses with the odd skirting board and electrical fitting not yet finished .
In my view it made the place just that much more a home - as did their old dog Hooper who was whet from his recent walk on the beach .

After a lasagne a glass of red wine ( steady ) and good conversation with them and their friend Dave I got the upstairs guest room - A room with a view ( pictures here ) My good deed with the limping man had already come back to me . I will try to be really helpful tomorrow to see if I can build up this good karma !

I was lucky enough to wake up just before Dawn and witnessed a great sunrise . I even managed to go back to sleep till 8:00 and wake fully refreshed . This truly is a magical Island - or I was dog tired - take your pick I know what I think !

The S.T.EN. Gun

“ We will never surrender !” France fell to the German Blitzkrieg in May 1940 . The retreating British Army ended up being rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk by a flotilla of little ships leaving behind much of their equipment . A German invasion was expected ! Winston Churchill the British prime minister made his famous “ we will fight them on the beaches – we will never surrender ! “ speech and the Battle of Britain was on ! The UK desperately needed submachineguns . The Government ordered well made expensive Thompsons from the still neutral United States but there was never enough available . In order to rapidly equip a sufficient fighting force to counter the threat of invasion , the Royal Small Arms Factory , Enfield ( North London ) was commissioned to produce an alternative quickly and in large numbers . Whats in a name S.T.En. There Major R. V. Shepherd OBE and Mr. Harold John Turpin came up with the Design which became

Bonny and Clyde and the Browning Automatic Rifle

Bonnie and Clyde and the BAR ! Clyde Barrow, holding a Browning automatic rifle. BAR's could fire a twenty-shot magazine loaded with armor-piercing ammunition in under three seconds. During the depression of the 1930's in the USA criminals were looked at in a different way by many of the people who had been victimized and impoverished by the rich bankers and the emerging powerful corporations. Many people saw them as people driven to the edge that were only taking back what was stolen from them and striking back at a society and Government that let the Depression cause so much harm to so many . Two of the most famous criminals of that time were Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow . They were known to be quite skilled with their weapons, and unlike most criminals, they practiced with them and maintained them . Sadly they are considered to be responsible for the deaths of at least Nine law enforcement officers and five civilians during

501 NE 4th street - Plumbing

Drainage     The first thing I have found strange is the constant requirement for testing at every stage but here with the building being largely wooden it does make sort of sense . A  minor fault in the plumbing could lie undetected otherwise within the walls and only surface once damp damage had become extensive and be very costly to repair . Thus it is required that once the drains have been run throughout the building frame they are filled completely with water to ensure their soundness . I took the wise precaution of making up a screw in fitting with a pressure gauge and an inflation valve to test the pipes with air first as once the system was full of water it would be time consuming and difficult to get the water out and to dry where necessary to effect repairs .     First things first - all the drainage flows within the house in a trunk and branch layout . The main 4 inch drain had already been tested and laid  under the basement floor . There are tables to show how
